Experimental study of three-dimensional CO2-water drainage and fracture-matrix interactions in fractured porous media

• We imaged 3-D CO 2 -water drainage in vertically stacked matrix-fracture columns that are different from classic core-flood settings. Capillary continuity the fracture was key to water and invasion matrix. Fracture saturation capillary were enhanced by non-uniform pressure countercurrent flow across fracture-matrix interface. Estimation of storage capacity fractured porous reservoirs requires a better understanding fundamentals systems. There few experiments on three-dimensional system, yet none have examined impacts fractures interactions. In this study, twelve conducted four columns, each comprising vertical stack cylindrical rock core, filter paper serving as an analogue horizontal fracture, ceramic plate. The core sample surrounded open space at top circumferential sides model fractures, allowing for displaced draining fracture. X-ray computed tomography visualize dynamic invasion/drainage processes samples showing contrasts anisotropy, permeability, heterogeneity. Experimental results show (1) equilibrium saturations matrix vary 0.10 0.60 controlled pressures up 200 kPa, (2) increaze with resulting drain (3) can be case high saturation, largely depends anisotropy core-scale experimental contribute understand interactions efficiency media.
